commissioning a roblox map: how environment work actually runs

a map is not one asset. it is a kit of pieces, a layout they are arranged into, a lighting pass, and a performance budget that has to hold when a hundred players are standing in the same square. commissioning it as one thing is how maps go over budget; here is how to commission it as four.

kit or set piece

almost every good roblox environment is a modular kit: walls, floors, trims, props and a handful of hero pieces, built on a grid so they snap together. a kit is cheaper per square metre, streams well, and lets your own team extend the map later. a set piece, a single hand-built statue or arena, is for the one place the camera always looks. brief a kit, and name the two or three set pieces.

the greybox comes first

before any art, the layout is blocked out in plain parts at real scale: where players walk, how far they can see, where the fights happen. the greybox is playtested, the layout changes, and only then is the kit built to fit it. skipping this step is the single most expensive mistake in environment work, because it means rebuilding art around a layout that did not survive contact with players.

what to put in the brief

  1. the game and the playable area: a lobby, an arena, an open world. rough dimensions in studs.
  2. the style lane and three references from games your players already play.
  3. the kit list you think you need, and the set pieces. we will push back on the list; that is part of the job.
  4. the budget: triangles per kit piece, atlases for the whole kit, and the target device. "must run on a mid-range phone with 50 players" is a real budget.
  5. lighting: the time of day, the mood, whether it is baked into textures or done in engine.
  6. what you are delivering yourself. if your team is doing layout and lighting, say so; the quote drops.

the budget lines that matter

linewhy
kit on one or two atlasesevery extra material is a draw call on every instance. a whole kit on two 1024 atlases runs where twenty materials will not.
pieces on a gridsnapping pieces mean fewer gaps, fewer one-off fixes and a map your own builders can extend.
simple collisiona collision mesh per piece, not the render mesh. this is where most environment lag comes from.
streaming-friendlyno single mesh larger than a room. the engine streams pieces in and out; it cannot stream half of one.

lighting is half the look

the same kit reads as five different maps under five different lighting setups. decide early whether the mood lives in the textures (cheap to run, fixed) or in engine lighting (flexible, costs performance), and brief it. a lighting pass at the end is where a good map becomes a screenshot people share.
